The documents everyone needs

Whatever your business type, these six are the base set.

PAN cardOf the business, or of the proprietor for a proprietorship
AadhaarOf the owner or authorised signatory
Passport photoJPEG, maximum 100 KB
Proof of business addressElectricity bill, property tax receipt, khata, or rent agreement + owner’s NOC
Bank proofCancelled cheque, or passbook/statement first & last page
Digital signature (DSC)Required for companies and LLPs; others verify with Aadhaar OTP

Then, by business type

Proprietor / Individual

PAN, Aadhaar and photo of the proprietor, plus the business address and bank proof above. The simplest case — no constitution document needed.

Partnership / LLP

PAN and Aadhaar of all partners; the partnership deed (or LLP incorporation certificate); photos of partners and the authorised signatory; and, for an LLP, a board resolution appointing the signatory.

Private / Public company

Company PAN; Certificate of Incorporation; MoA and AoA; PAN and Aadhaar of the authorised signatory (must be Indian); PAN and address proof of all directors; and a board resolution appointing the signatory.

The two proofs that trip people up

Address and bank details cause most GST rejections — get them right the first time.

Address proof

Owned premises: electricity bill, property-tax receipt, khata or ownership deed. Rented: the rent/lease agreement plus a no-objection letter (NOC) from the owner and a recent utility bill.

File format

Upload PDF or JPEG, and most fields cap at 100 KB. Scan documents rather than photographing them so they stay legible under the size limit.

Bank proof

A cancelled cheque showing the printed account name, or the first and last page of the passbook or a bank statement.

Do you even need to register?

GST registration becomes mandatory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (₹20 lakh and ₹10 lakh in special-category states). Some businesses must register regardless of turnover — for example, anyone making inter-state supplies or selling through an e-commerce platform.

Common questions

Is there a government fee for GST registration?
No. GST registration on the portal is free. You only pay a professional fee if you use someone to prepare and file it — ApplyLegal does it for ₹1,499.
How long does GST registration take?
Usually 3–7 working days when documents are clean. It can take longer if the application is flagged for physical verification of the premises.
Do I need a digital signature (DSC)?
Companies and LLPs must sign with a DSC. Proprietors and partnerships can verify the application with an Aadhaar OTP (EVC) instead.
Can I register from home or a rented shop?
Yes, with the right address proof — for rented premises, the rent agreement plus the owner’s NOC and a recent utility bill; for owned premises, an ownership document.
What is the turnover limit to register?
₹40 lakh for goods and ₹20 lakh for services (₹20 lakh and ₹10 lakh in special-category states). Some businesses, such as e-commerce sellers, must register regardless.
Can you register on my behalf?
Yes. Send us the documents above and ApplyLegal files your GST registration for ₹1,499, then hands you the GSTIN.
